Beyond the Meat Grinder: A New Reality for the Disrupted Worker

January 22, 2026

The news of the recent layoffs at Prodigy hit close to home. Having worked there myself, I know the caliber of talent walking out those doors. These are people with unique, highly specialized skill sets—the kind of people who, in any other era, would have recruiters beating down their doors.

But the market has “clamped down.” For the first time in my career, I'm seeing more of my peers and colleagues out of work than ever before. If your job involves sitting in front of a computer, you are currently in the crosshairs of a massive disruption.

The “Meat Grinder” of 2026

We are currently living through a hiring process that I can only describe as a meat grinder.

  • The Odds: Success rates for standard applications have plummeted to 4% or lower.
  • The Gatekeepers: Your resume isn't being read by a human; it's being “ingested” and discarded by AI long before a manager sees it.
  • The Shopify Standard: Companies are increasingly adopting the “AI-first” rule for headcount. If you want to hire a human, you have to prove to the business that AI cannot do that job first.

This is the reality. AI is making us so much faster that one of two things must happen: either we find “higher value” work and exploration, or the role simply vanishes.

Choosing a Different Path

When I found myself at a crossroads, I'll be completely candid: I refused to go back into the meat grinder. I decided to double down, drink the “AI Kool-Aid,” and build my own company, Vervian. I'm not saying everyone should become an entrepreneur. If you want to be a plumber, an electrician, or a physiotherapist, you likely have another 10–15 years of “AI safety.”

But if you love what you do in tech and want to keep doing it, you have to accept that the “way” you do it has changed forever. Answering questions the way we did two years ago is a one-way ticket to obsolescence.

Sharing Experiences, Not Advice

I struggle with giving advice—it feels a bit like talking at people. Instead, I want to share two experiences that have worked for me during this transition.

1. Become the “AI Person” by Default

I don't claim to be the world's leading AI expert. But I try every new tool that comes out. I experiment daily. This “knowledge-in-practice” has opened doors and started conversations I never would have had otherwise. Being the person who knows how to solve the new problems is a massive value add.

2. The Death of the Resume; The Rise of the Authentic Site

LinkedIn is, in many ways, fundamentally broken. It's too easy to “game.” Anyone can use AI to generate a perfect, tailored resume in 30 seconds that may or may not actually reflect who they are.

I believe the trend for 2026 is the return of the personal, curated experience. For me, that's jeremylist.com.

  • It's Unfakeable: It's a place where you tell your specific story.
  • Interactive Authenticity: I'm moving toward integrating chatbots trained specifically on my data and my experiences.

Imagine a hiring manager having a “pre-interview” with an AI that actually knows your history. You can't “AI your way” past that because the data is your literal life's work. It forces a level of honesty that a PDF resume can't touch.

A Note on Integrity

There is a growing trend of people “gaming the system” to get jobs they aren't qualified for by using AI to mask their lack of domain knowledge. If you get a job that way, you won't keep it. Employers recognize quickly when someone can't have a “grown-up conversation” or solve a problem without a prompt. Worse, you're taking a seat from someone who actually belongs there.

What's Next?

To my friends and former colleagues: I feel for you. This is a heavy time, and the transition is far from over.

If you're looking for what's next, or if you're interested in how to build out your own authentic digital presence or chatbot, reach out. I've been in the trenches with these tools for a year and a half, and I'd be happy to chat and share what I've learned.

We're all in this boat together. <3
